NORTHERN TERRITORY / RankWire.AI / – A soldier from the Australian Army died when a military vehicle overturned during a training drill at Mount Bundey on Monday. Five other personnel sustained injuries in the same incident. The Australian Defence Force confirmed the event on Tuesday, stating that the soldier’s family had been informed. The accident took place at the Mount Bundey Training Area, approximately 100 kilometres south-east of Darwin. Defence officials asked the public to respect the privacy of those affected and their families.

Northern Territory Police responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. on October 5. Emergency services, including CareFlight NT and St John Ambulance, also arrived. The injured soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to Royal Darwin Hospital at roughly 7:30 p.m., with three others transported via aircraft around 9:30 p.m. All five wounded personnel remained in hospital as of Tuesday. The medical evacuations from the remote military training site were supported by Northern Territory authorities.
Lieutenant General Susan Coyle, Chief of Army, stated that Defence has initiated an investigation into the fatal rollover. The site was secured by military police, and a land accident investigation board will review the incident. Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole mentioned that police are assisting Defence and are also investigating on behalf of the coroner. The cause of the crash has not been disclosed. Coyle noted that investigators require time to determine what happened before the Army responds to their findings.
Investigation Underway by Defence
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offered his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen soldier. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles also expressed sympathies, calling the loss a tragic incident for the Army. Defence assured that it is supporting the families involved in the event. Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also extended her condolences, thanking emergency teams for their efforts in transporting the injured soldiers from Mount Bundey to Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mount Bundey functions as a major training site for the Australian Army, situated south-east of Darwin. It is used by Australian and allied forces for various exercises, including live-fire drills. This latest fatality follows another Australian Army training-related death earlier in 2026, when Warrant Officer Class Two Lachlan Muddle, a soldier from the Special Air Service Regiment, died in May after a mid-air collision during parachute training at Jervis Bay. Another paratrooper involved in that accident was minorly injured but survived.
Previous Losses at Mount Bundey
The Mount Bundey Training Area was also the site of a fatal incident during a 2017 Army exercise. Private Jason Challis lost his life during a live-fire urban training session at the base. A coronial inquest held by Northern Territory authorities subsequently examined the circumstances surrounding his death. The Department of Defence later pleaded guilty in Darwin Local Court to neglecting a workplace health and safety duty. The 2026 rollover remains a separate matter, currently under investigation.
The Defence Department has not publicly identified the soldier who died in Monday’s rollover beyond confirming his age and gender. No information has been released regarding his unit or the specific activity underway when the incident occurred. The Australian Defence Force stated that further details would be provided as available. Police are assisting with the coronial process, while the Army conducts its internal inquiry. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the rollover or what factors contributed to the deadly crash.
